Jose Rivera, a native Peru has contributed to the rise of Afro- Latin music in the Bay Area. As Artistic Director of San Francisco Carnaval Contingent, Fogo Na Roupa, he has led the contingent to 11 SF Carnaval Parade Grand Champions and has a tenure of over 20 years teaching percussion. He has contributed greatly to the Bay Area Jazz scene, adding his percussion style to BAMMY winners, Mingus Amongus and opening for such acts as Carlos Santana.
Jose began his studies with well-known artists such as the late Carlos Aceituno of Fogo Na Roupa, Jorge Alabe of Oba, Oba and master guitarist from Peru, Carlos Hayre. Abroad, his studies include travels to Cuba, Brazil and Colombia where he studied with local musicians.
Jose Rivera prides himself with the growth of his community which consists of emerging artists who come from immigrant families. He has developed generations of percussionists with his commitment to arts education. He looks forward to drumming within community to provide space for healing.
Fogo Na Roupa, founded in 1989, is a Bay Area, award-winning Grupo Carnavalesco and performing company which combines the community’s raw spirit with the technical expertise of its illustrious Founding Director, the late Mestre Carlos Aceituno. The name, which means “Clothes On Fire,” is symbolic of the hot energy—generated by innovative rhythms and infectious dance moves—that has created dedicated Canavalescos in the greater Bay Area. Under the artistic direction of Jose Rivera and Metzi Henriquez, Fogo continues to fire up the crowds, winning multiple San Francisco Carnaval Grand Championships, Best of the Bay 2011, and a 2012 “Corazon Del Barrio Award” from Mission Cultural Center. Their mission is to provide cultural education of Afro-Brazilian Carnaval traditions through music and dance, while creating a safe community for emerging BIPOC artists.
