Dance Mission Theater presents
Dance is B(l)ack!
June 22-23, June 29-30 at Dance Mission

$5 dance all day!

Dance Is B(l)ack is a four-day festival in June (22nd, 23rd, 29th, 30th) that affirms the creative achievements, vast dance knowledge and lived experiences of Black dance educators living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. For decades, Black and afrodiasporic dance has been a dominant form of expression and cultural practice among diverse groups of people in the Bay Area and beyond. However, due to rapid gentrification, eminent domain and other socioeconomic factors, it’s become increasingly difficult for Black and melanated teachers to survive as educators and be stewards of their own creations.

For the first time, Dance Is B(l)ack will feature the artistic work and pedagogy of Black dance educators across the African diaspora. Attendees are encouraged to experience the diversity of teaching styles and dance forms represented in the festival! There will also be an exclusive screening of Harriet’s Gun 2: Shapeshifting Towards A Radically Imagined Black Future presented by Dance Mission Theater’s Liberation Academy.
