Class Description:

Explore Afro-Brazilian dance with Metzi Henriquez and Jose Rivera of Fogo Na Roupa. You will learn movements coined by award winning SF Carnaval Grand Champions Fogo Na Roupa celebrating the different styles of samba including Afro Samba, Samba Reggea, Samba no pe and Samba do Roda. The classes include an Afro-Contemporary warm up, progressions and Orixa inspired movements. The class is for all levels of dancers and will include live drumming directed by Jose Rivera, Fogo Na Roupa musical director.

Metzi Henriquez Bio:

Metzi Henriquez, co-director of award winning Fogo Na Roupa Grupo Carnavalesco is a direct student of Fogo Na Roupa founder, Mestre Carlos Aceituno. As co-director she has led the comparsa to 8 SF Carnaval Parade Grand Champions and has a tenure of 16 years teaching at Mission Cultural Center. Her teaching repertoire consists of Steppin’ Out Dance Studio, SF Arts Education, residences and guest artists workshops at Oakland School of the Arts Savage Jazz Summer Intensive, San Francisco School of the Arts Word Music and Dance Department and New World Ballet. Metzi’s choreographies have been featured at Oakland Raiders half-time show, SF 49ers pre-game show, Ethnic Dance Festival (2015 & 2017), World Arts West Rotunda Series (2019) and SF Symphony 100 year Celebration, among others. Fogo Na Roupa community is her inspiration!

Fogo Na Roupa Bio:

Fogo na Roupa, founded in 1989 is a Bay Area, award-winning, Grupo Carnavalesco and performing company which combines the community’s raw spirit with the technical expertise of its illustrious Founding Director, the late Mestre Carlos Aceituno. The name, which means “Clothes On Fire”, is symbolic of the hot energy generated by the innovative rhythms and infectious dance moves that has created dedicated students and Canavalescos in the greater Bay Area. Under the artistic direction of Jose Rivera and Metzi Henriquez, Fogo continues to fire up the crowds, winning multiple San Francisco Carnaval Grand Championships, , Best of the Bay 2011, and a 2012 “Corazon Del Barrio Award” from Mission Cultural Center. Fogo Na Roupa’s performance highlights include Bay Area opener for Brazil’s popular Olodum, opening for Carlos Santana, internationally acclaimed Brazilian recording artist, Carlinhos Brown, SF Ethnic Dance Festivals, SF Symphony 100th Anniversary, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers halftime shows.
